Tunga in Numbers: Talent Pool, Clients, Retention and Terms

Quick answer

Tunga was founded in 2015 and has its headquarters in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. As of September 2026 it has 3,500 vetted professionals across 38 African countries, and it has worked with more than 300 client companies in Europe and North America, current and former. In 2025 about 1 in 56 placements ended because the professional left for another job, and none so far in 2026. Clients pay €26-37 an hour, invoiced monthly on the hours worked, with no setup, search or replacement fee.

Tunga at a glance

  • Founded: 2015.
  • Headquarters: Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Tunga is a distributed organisation with teams in Rotterdam, Lagos, Kampala and Nairobi, and no offices.
  • Talent pool: 3,500 vetted professionals across 38 African countries (September 2026).
  • Clients: more than 300 companies in Europe and North America, current and former (September 2026).
  • Languages: English and French.

How long placements run, and why they end

About half of Tunga's open-ended placements since November 2022 ran for more than a year, and about 1 in 4 for more than two years. The longest current placement has been running for more than four and a half years.

What happened to Tunga's open-ended roles in 2025, as of 31 December 2025. A role is the position at the client: when Tunga replaces the professional, the role continues.

Leaving and replacement

  • Placements ended because the professional left for another job: about 1 in 56 in 2025, and none so far in 2026.
  • For comparison: in the Eraneos/Whitelane Dutch IT Sourcing Study 2025, turnover at the supplier was named as a weakness in 22% of 652 supplier relationships. European tech companies lose on average 12% of their engineers a year (Ravio, all reasons for leaving).
  • Replacement: at no extra cost and without a time limit. The successor usually starts within a month of the previous professional's last day, sometimes within days.
  • Why replacements happen: between 2023 and 2026, more than a third followed a change in what the client needed, such as a more senior profile or a different stack. About a third followed a professional leaving, and about a quarter underperformance or a fit that didn't work.
  • Professionals moved off a client on Tunga's initiative: none since Tunga was founded in 2015.

Professionals and the account team

  • Time with Tunga: about 1 in 5 professionals have worked through Tunga for 4 years or more, across clients; the longest for 7 years.
  • More than one placement: about 1 in 4 professionals have had more than one placement through Tunga, some up to 4.
  • Account team: everyone on it has been with Tunga for at least 4 years.

Selection and starting

  • Pre-qualification: at least 3 years of experience and good English, before any interview or test.
  • Identity: proof of identity is the first step of selection. There has been no case of identity fraud since Tunga was founded in 2015.
  • Shortlist: within 48 hours, usually 3 candidates or more; the client decides whom to interview and whom to work with.
  • Start: operational within a week when the client can move fast.

Terms

  • Rate: €26-37 an hour, invoiced monthly on the hours worked.
  • Other fees: none; no setup, search or replacement fee.
  • Notice: one working day in the first 4 weeks, 4 weeks after that, for both sides.
  • Payment term: 10 working days.
  • Engagement length: months or longer; Tunga does not place someone for a task of a few weeks.

How these figures are kept current

Each figure carries the date or the year it was measured. Tunga checks the figures on its website every quarter, and this page is updated when one changes.

Where Tunga fits

Tunga takes the staffing side off the plate of companies that need digital professionals: software engineers, AI operators, product managers and other digital roles, from across Africa. The client directs the work. Tunga handles finding and vetting, contracts, payments and compliance, onboarding, keeping people, and replacing them when someone leaves or it isn't working. The professionals are independent freelancers contracted by Tunga and work remotely from their own country; the client has one contract, with Tunga, and a delivery manager who checks in with both sides. In 2025, about 1 in 56 placements ended because the professional left for another job. Founded in 2015; 3,500 professionals across 38 African countries and 300+ client companies, as of September 2026.

Tunga is not the right fit when the role has to be on site, when the work means talking to your clients in a language other than English or French, or when saving on cost is the main reason you're looking.
