The Client: PortPay: making marinas more efficient
PortPay makes marinas and port facilities more efficient and profitable. The system consists of hardware components, a web application, and a mobile app. Ports can use the system to manage water traffic, improve operational efficiency, enhance security, and introduce new monetisation options.
The Challenge: Continuous development without fixed-scope contracts
Since 2019, PortPay had worked with Tunga developers on several frontend projects, each scoped as it came in and often on tight deadlines. Every new piece of work meant another round of scoping and approval. PortPay wanted a setup with more flexibility, where work could start as soon as they had decided on it.
The Solution: A fixed team, project manager included
From July 2020, PortPay worked with a fixed monthly team instead of separate projects, so no time was lost on approval rounds. Besides the developers, Tunga staffed the project manager role: Elijah Atuhaire from Uganda worked for PortPay, ran the planning and kept the backlog. What got built stayed PortPay's call:
- Elijah and PortPay built the backlog together and prioritised it before each sprint
- PortPay marked which projects and features to add, and the team estimated them
- PortPay made the final decision on which items to work on each sprint
- PortPay received a status report every four weeks covering hours spent and items delivered
