‘ICT as Fair Trade 2.0: Personnel shortage solved with help from Africa.’ In January, Het Parool was the first Dutch media outlet to write about Tunga this year in a long article with this headline about FairTrade Software. Tunga-founder Ernesto Spruyt and technical director David Semakula were interviewed. Soon, other newspapers and magazines followed.
FairTrade software as a win-win strategy
The red line in most publications was the insight that sourcing software developers from Africa is a win-win for European businesses. At least, when done right. There is a vast and largely untapped talent pool of tech professionals in Africa. Meanwhile, there is a big shortage in Europe and the United States. By applying FairTrade software principles (eg fair wages, solid labor conditions, career and development opportunities) tapping into the African pool is a winning strategy for all. And this is exactly what Tunga is aiming at.
